This week’s issue keeps circling back to the same question in different rooms: who gets to decide, and on what basis?
At Windsor Golf Hotel, nine opposition principals signed a pact to accept an arithmetic they haven’t yet seen.
At Wamunyoro, one man rejected that arithmetic on the strength of a regional mandate the national polls don’t share. Both are legitimate political choices.
Only one of them is consistent with what three independent surveys are actually saying — and we’ve tried, this week, to hold that distinction clearly rather than flatten it into “opposition disunity,” the lazier headline.
The same instinct runs through our other Perspective pieces. Githu Muigai’s Katiba@16 remarks forced a harder question than the anniversary usually invites: is Kenya governing itself through arrangements — nusu mkate, the handshake, the broad-based government — that the Constitution’s text was never amended to permit?
And on debt, we’ve tried to do something newsrooms rarely bother with: separate the politically convenient number from the accurate one, by asking not just how much Kenya owes, but when the clock actually started.

Ambition, this week, was easy to find. Delivery — and the discipline to measure it honestly — was harder.
That remains the job.
